📄 Editorial Review

1984 Hosting is an Icelandic provider founded in 2006 by free-software and civil-rights enthusiasts. The legal operator is 1984 ehf., based in Reykjavík, Iceland. Privacy, freedom of expression, free software, and renewable energy form the company's operating philosophy rather than a decorative theme. More than 94,000 users now rely on its services, and it has become a substantial hosting company in the Icelandic market.

The name recalls George Orwell's warning about surveillance and concentrated power. This identity carries practical consequences. The provider works within Icelandic jurisdiction, supports lawful journalists, activists, publishers, individuals, and organizations, and attempts to notify customers when authorities, lawyers, or courts seek information where the law permits. Its policy does not create an anything-goes platform: violence, terrorism, hatred, illegal content, unsolicited mail, copyright infringement, weapons, pornography, file sharing, pharmaceuticals, cryptomining, and other harmful uses can lead to termination.

The principal products are shared hosting, self-managed VPS, managed VPS, domain registration, FreeDNS, and a WordPress Security Pack. This is a focused infrastructure catalog rather than a collection of marketing, design, and proprietary SaaS tools. The provider favors free and open-source software wherever practical and runs the computing platform on Icelandic renewable electricity.

Shared hosting is an out-of-the-box service built on OpenLiteSpeed. It includes an in-house control panel, email, automatic Let's Encrypt SSL, DDoS protection, statistics, SFTP assistance, DNS management, and compatibility with WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal. The Regular plan permits unlimited domains, subdomains, aliases, bandwidth, disk, databases, mailboxes, and email storage under the shared-resource rules. An eligible .com, .net, or .org registration is included.

Unlimited does not mean unbounded. Shared customers use common CPU, memory, storage, and network capacity, and the terms permit restrictions when consumption exceeds normal shared-server behavior. Disk must relate directly to hosted websites, databases, or mail and cannot become general backup or unrelated file storage. A site needing sustained capacity should move to VPS or managed VPS rather than treating an unlimited label as a substitute for dedicated resources.

The self-managed VPS platform runs on enterprise hardware in Iceland with NVMe storage, root SSH access, a web VNC console, instant deployment, a dedicated virtual environment, and always-on DDoS mitigation. The no-logging policy covers platform treatment of customer VPS traffic, while the customer controls system and application logs inside the guest. Images include ordinary Linux systems and purpose-built OpenVPN, WireGuard, LEMP, and Nextcloud installations.

The privacy images are useful but demand informed administration. OpenVPN can operate on port 443 with certificates prepared automatically, and WireGuard supplies a lighter encrypted tunnel. LEMP creates a ready nginx, MySQL, and PHP server, while Nextcloud supplies self-hosted file synchronization and sharing. The customer must still patch the operating system, protect keys, configure the firewall, monitor usage, maintain backups, and comply with law and policy.

Managed VPS is designed for sites that need dedicated CPU, RAM, and disk without employing a system administrator. It combines OpenLiteSpeed, expert administration, daily backups, 24/7 monitoring, SSL, DDoS protection, and optional root access. The familiar shared-hosting control environment remains available, and 1984 migrates an existing shared site at no charge. Dedicated resources improve consistency and visibility, although they do not by themselves create high availability across several machines.

FreeDNS is a separate public service that works even when a domain is hosted elsewhere. It permits unlimited zones and supports Anycast, automatic DNSSEC, A, AAAA, CAA, CNAME, MX, SRV, TXT, SSHFP and TLSA records, dynamic DNS, web redirects, zone history, restoration, and operation as a secondary or backup nameserver. The service can therefore support ordinary sites, mail domains, certificate controls, security records, and organizations running their own primary DNS.

FreeDNS has a stated record of 100% uptime for 20 years, but it is contractually free of warranty or obligation. That distinction is important. A historical achievement is useful evidence of operational maturity, yet it is not an SLA promising future compensation. Critical DNS users should combine multiple authoritative systems, monitor delegation and DNSSEC, and retain zone exports.

The WordPress Security Pack adds an application firewall, virtual patching, malware scanning, brute-force protection, security hardening, managed core/theme/plug-in updates, performance optimization, backups every four hours, 30-day retention, emergency restoration, and weekly reports. Customers can initiate as many as four instant backups per day. This addresses WordPress application risk that ordinary server-level security cannot fully cover.

The pack is an add-on rather than a replacement hosting plan. Its firewall can block SQL injection, cross-site scripting, hostile IPs, and known exploit patterns, while managed updates target vulnerable components. Human review remains necessary for custom code, abandoned plug-ins, compromised administrator credentials, ecommerce logic, and privacy compliance. The restore service reduces recovery time but cannot guarantee that every third-party extension will remain compatible after an update.

Domain registration supports privacy where the registry permits it. The catalog includes .com, .net, .org, .is, .io, .info, .cloud, .dev, .me, and many specialized extensions. Registration, transfer, renewal, eligibility, and privacy rules remain controlled by each registry. Domain ownership survives a hosting refund because the non-refundable registration cost is deducted.

The overall business at 1984.hosting appears relatively unstable compared with higher-quality hosting providers. Relying on an in-house control panel also feels out of step with today’s market, where mature, widely adopted panels are generally expected.
