Feb 16, 2004 : C&W Extends Relationship with Shell

📅 - Telecommunications carrier Cable & Wireless (cw.com) announced today that it has concluded an agreement with Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria to provide a fully managed fixed-line communications service for its operations in Nigeria using the SAT3 cable system.

C&W said the agreement, which extends previous deals with Shell companies in Cameroon and Gabon, allows it to deploy fixed-line communications, rather than satellite technology, within West Africa. C&W said fixed-line technology, using the SAT3 cable system, offers several advantages over satellite technology, including being more scalable, offering more capacity and supporting new applications. The company said the deployment will help C&W achieve fast and more reliable communications.
"We chose Cable & Wireless because we needed an international communications company that could understand our local requirements, and work with government and industry partners to deliver a single solution," says Frank Edozie, IT manager for Shell exploration & production's Africa region.
C&W said the agreement is an extension of its strategic relationship with Shell Information Technology International B.V. (SITI BV), formed in 2001. The relationship was established to help Shell improve the management of its telecommunications.
"This new extension to our existing relationship with Shell demonstrates our ability to serve multinational organizations on a global basis," says Robin Morgan, managing director of retail and industry for Cable & Wireless.
