Jun 11, 2004 : Web Site Pushes .xxx Top-level Domain

📅 - Child protection advocate Mary Conyers' Web site Protecteverychild.org (protecteverychild.org) is pushing the movement to create a separate .xxx domain for Web sites that feature adult content. Protecteverychild.org, with members in 39 US states as well as in Puerto Rico, Zambia, Israel, China, Canada, and Australia, has received grassroots support from a number of child advocacy groups as well as the US Internet Crime Task Force. Adult entertainment giant Vivid Video has also endorsed the idea.

The Web site includes a page featuring links to lawmakers, the White House, media outlets and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the body that oversees the domain name system. The .xxx top-level domain has already been proposed to ICANN, which is slated to decide its fate in September.
An organization called The International Foundation for Online Responsibility applied to sponsor the .xxx domain. In its application, IFOR said an .xxx domain would help control the spread of adult content to children.
Analysts agree for the most part that moving the adult industry to the .xxx domain would not be difficult on a technical level. Some free speech groups have expressed their opposition to the idea.
