Jun 22, 2004 : Bloggers Consider Open-Source Software
📅 - According to a report by research and analysis firm Netcraft (netcraft.com), the fallout from a couple of recent controversies over free blogging services is leading some bloggers to consider shifting to paid services, while also generating interest in free and open-source blogging software.
The controversies stemmed from Dave Winer suddenly shutting down many free Weblogs.com Web sites and Six Apart introducing pricey new licensing fees for Movable Type 3.0. The moves angered many bloggers. Both Winer and Six Apart responded to the criticisms with conciliatory gestures. Winer announced a transition plan to move stranded bloggers and Six Apart unveiled a new payment structure designed to make its software more affordable. Netcraft said that with more blogs building traffic and selling advertisements, bloggers are evaluating the tools and services powering their online journals. With the blogging community's well known thrifty attitude, it is likely that they will consider free and open source blogging tools, says Netcraft.
