Sep 17, 2004 : New MyDoom Variant Targets Symantec

📅 - The latest version of the MyDoom virus, known as MyDoom.W, is programmed to instruct infected computers to launch a distributed denial of service attack on the Web site of Symantec (symantec.com), a developer of anti-virus software, according to a report by research and analysis firm Netcraft (netcraft.com).

According to Netcraft, MyDoom.W is circulating moderately at the moment, but has not yet had a visible affect on Symantec's operations.
There is some confusion over details of the virus. Symantec told Netcraft that the virus programs infected machines to send a GET request to Symantec.com on port 80 every 300ms from now till October 1. Other anti-virus firms, according to Netcraft, say the attack does not begin until September 29. Several different firms have also identified the virus as MyDoom.X and MyDoom.Y.
The MyDoom virus, considered the most damaging ever, first appeared in January. Many of the earlier versions of the virus were similarly programmed to launch DDoS attacks against select Web sites. Attacks against the SCO Group and the Recording Industry Association of America were successful, while attempts to bring down Microsoft were relatively ineffective.
