📅 - Storage industry leaders announced on Tuesday that they would form an open source community named Aperi.

The companies include Brocade Communication Systems, Cisco Systems, Computer Associates International, Fujitsu, IBM, Engenio Information Technologies, McDATA Corporation and Network Appliance.
Aperi will take an open source approach to building a free platform for managing different brands of storage devices. The organization says the new platform will give customers more flexibility in managing their storage environments. Aperi will build upon existing open storage standards such as the Storage Networking Industry Association's Storage Management Initiative Specification. A board of directors will be announced in the near future.
