Jan 13, 2006 : Million Dollar Homepage Attacked

📅 - The Web hosting provider that hosts the Million Dollar Homepage (milliondollarhomepage.com) says an electronic attack caused the extended outages early Thursday morning that were reported by Netcraft (netcraft.com).

The distributed denial of service occurred as 21-year old UK student Alex Tew sold the remaining 1,000 pixels of his innovative ad service in an eBay auction for $38,100, bringing the site's total earnings to $1,037,100.

"The site received a major DDoS attack, and DDoS protection and prevention was not included in the customer's plan," Russell Weiss of InfoRelay Online Systems wrote in an email to Netcraft. "That said, we voluntarily took a number of steps to alleviate this attack while working within the appropriate budget."

InfoRelay is the owner and operator of Sitelutions, which hosts the Million Dollar Homepage. It says that Tew will not be charged for any additional bandwidth consumed by the attack. He will, however, have to reinvest some of his earnings to pay for the defense against DDoS attacks service, which is not included in his plan.
