SaskTel Quietly Shuts Down Web Hosting Without Explanation
📅 - Saskatoon web hosting provider SaskTel has quietly shut down its web hosting service without offering a clear explanation to customers, and it's left many people upset. One business owner in the area, Dale Jack, said the company sent him an email one month prior to the shut down letting him know that his web hosting would be taken over by Oubavo Inc. on March 1.
Jack was upset about the unexpected shut down and transition: “I was angered because I oppose privatization, and I see this as privatization.” Jack says he's been a SaskTel customer for nearly 10 years and uses the 109 year old corporation for phone and Internet services.
Oubavo, the web hosting company that will be taking on SaskTel's former customers, posted a message on its website detailing their desire to “ensure a seamless transition for existing customers.” SaskTel spokesperson Greg Jacobs revealed that the decision to shut down the company's web hosting arm was purely economical.
“After a review of our web hosting services, we determined that it was no longer economically viable for SaskTel to continue offering the service.”
