Government Accidentally Reveals Edward Snowden as Target of 2013 Lavabit Case
📅 - On Thursday, the U.S. Government accidentally revealed the identity of the target of their 2013 Lavabit email investigation. Lavabit was served with a pen register order and was ordered to turn over the SSL key so the FBI could decrypt traffic.
The target of the 2013 investigation? Edward Snowden. Federal authorities have released a cache of documents without Snowden's name redacted, which is how Cryptome originally found that the target was Snowden.

📅 - Google Cloud Stealing Some of the Apple Business from Amazon - Apple has been one of the largest users of the Amazon Cloud Services and has made the decision to move some of its' infrastructure to the Google Cloud. While Google hasn't announced Apple as a customer yet, an anonymous source leaked the information to CRN.
Representatives from both Apple and Google decided not to comment, while a spokesperson from Amazon questioned the integrity of the sources giving CRN information. According to the report, Apple hasn't stopped using AWS completely, but has moved a large portion of their cloud services to the Google Cloud Platform. .
📅 - Most Internet Users Think Encryption is Too Complicated - Even though about 80% of those surveyed believe privacy is a fundamental right, about half think the government should be given access to encrypted files for safety, according to research done by Open-Xchange. The Consumer Openness Index 2016 shows the strong opinions people have on privacy, along with only about 20% using email encryption.
Germans responding to the survey are much more likely to use email encryption than Americans, while about 50% for every country participating stated encryption is “too complicated.” The survey included about 3,000 interment users from Germany, the United States and the United Kingdom. .
