Intel To Use Light Pulse Technology To Increase Data Speed Transfers In Its Supercomputers
📅 - Intel announced plans earlier this week to add light pulses in its supercomputers next year, a addition that will improve data speed transfers.
The chip maker will implement optical cables in order to allow data to move at faster speeds than copper wiring that is traditionally used in storage units and computing, reports PCWorld.
“If all your compute nodes are connected via photonics, it does start to make application performance look different,” says Intel Vice President Charlie Wuischpard.
Currently light pulses can be found in “power-efficient and high-speed data transfers over communications networks,” though this technology is being found more in data centers and PCs.
The report notes that the company will continue focusing on optical technology due to its ability to potentially surpass exascale computing, which supercomputer performance is currently at more than 1 exaflop.
By 2020, the chipmaker hopes to have a 1 exaflop supercomputer that can fit into a 20-megawatt data center.
