Dropbox Claims They Were Not Hacked, Information Accessed From Third Party Services
📅 - On Monday thousands of Dropbox usernames and passwords were leaked on Reddit, where the hackers promised to release more if they were not paid in Bitcoins.
However, Dropbox claims that they were not hacked and the stolen information was accessed from third party services, reports Yahoo News.
“The usernames and passwords referenced in these articles were stolen from unrelated services, not Dropbox,” says the company via blog post. “Attackers then used these stolen credentials to try to log in to sites across the internet, including Dropbox.”
The company noted that they have security measures that detect “suspicious login activity”, in which they automatically reset customer's passwords.
Dropbox's blog later added that they passwords posted on Reddit were not from current Dropbox accounts.
“A subsequent list of usernames and passwords has been posted online. We've checked and these are not associated with Dropbox accounts.”
