Snowden Asks Hackers To Develop Anti-Surveillance Technology To Help Future Whistleblowers
📅 - During the Hackers On Planet Earth (HOPE) conference on Saturday, Edward Snowden said he intends to devote much of his time to finding ways to help people communicate anonymously with encrypted messages.
“You in this room, right now have both the means and the capability to improve the future by encoding our rights into programs and protocols by which we rely every day,” said Snowden during the New York City event via remote video conference from Russia. “That is what a lot of my future work is going to be involved in.”
He went on to say that hackers need to spend more time developing tools to allow whistleblowers the opportunity to divulge government information to journalists without having to worry about going to jail or their identity compromised, reports Mashable.
Daniel Ellsberg, the whistleblower who leaked the Pentagon Papers in 1971, mirrored his statements by saying that “a lot of blood has flowed because people bit their tongues, swallowed their whistles and didn't speak out.”
He encouraged people working for the government and corporations to come out and expose the corruptions and crimes they see to the public.
“You people need to do what you can…to make it possible for people to do this without spending their life in prison.”
