House of Representatives Vote To Cut NSA’s “Backdoor” Funding
📅 - The U.S. House of Representatives passed an amendment on Thursday evening to cut funding for two of the National Security Agency's surveillance programs.
The amendment, proposed by Republican Thomas Massie and Democrat Zoe Lofgren, passed 293-123 in favor of cutting funding for “programs engineering security vulnerabilities in US-made tech products, commonly known as backdoors,” as reported by CNet.
Additionally, under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Section 702, the NSA would be barred from accessing American's Internet usage without a warrant.
“We took a big step tonight to #ShutTheBackDoor on unwarranted government surveillance by passing the Massie-Lofgren amendment,” wrote Rep. Zoe Lofgren via Facebook. “The House stood up for the American people and the Constitution, and that is something we can all celebrate.”
Lofgren and Massie's proposal comes in response to a report from Der Spiegel, in which the German newspaper claimed the NSA planted spyware in computer, hard drives, and routers in order to remotely gain access to users systems.
Devices that reportedly had been intercepted and compromised include hardware from Dell, Cisco, Maxtor, Western Digital, Seagate, Samsung, and Huawei.
