eBay Faces Multiple Investigations Over Recent Data Breach

📅 - Online auction company, eBay, is facing a possible European investigation into the recent data breach that was made public earlier this week.

On Wednesday, eBay urged all 145 million users to change their passwords following a data breach by cyber criminals into their database that contained encrypted password, customers' names, email and home addressed, phone number, date of birth, and employee credentials.

In an interview with BBC Radio 5 live, the UK's information commissioner said the breach was “very serious” but they could not yet investigate the matter due to data protection laws.

“There's millions of UK citizens affected by this, and we've been clear that we're monitoring it, but by taking the wrong action under the law now we risk invalidating any investigation,” said information commissioner, Christopher Graham.

“You've got to make sure you're not foot-faulted or you'll get in trouble with the lawyers.”

Meanwhile, three U.S. states, Florida, Connecticut, and Illinois, said they would launch a joint investigation into the breach, reports ZDNet.

According to eBay, the hack occurred sometime between late February and early March, though the compromised employee credentials were not recognized till about two weeks ago.
