May, 2014 : Hackers Attack a U.S. Public Utility Company


📅 - Cyber attackers recently hacked the computer systems on a unknown U.S. public utility, reports CNN.

“A public utility was recently compromised when a sophisticated threat actor gained unauthorized access to its control system network,” says a report from the Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team.

“After notification of the incident, ICS-CERT validated that the software used to administer the control system assets was accessible via Internet facing hosts. The systems were configured with a remote access capability, utilising a simple password mechanism; however, the authentication method was susceptible to compromise via standard brute forcing techniques.”

The hackers gained access to the unidentified company by using “brute force” such as bypassing passwords in the companies computer systems.

According to a report from Homeland Security, the company had

“Malicious cyberactivity targeting government and private sector networks can result in intentional and in some cases unintentional consequences, which can threaten national and economic security, critical infrastructure, as well as public health and welfare,” Glenn Lemons, senior intelligence officer at DHS.

Last year the Department of Homeland Security received more than 180 security reports from various organizations.
