FBI’s Facial Recognition System Said To Contain 52 Million Images By 2015
📅 - The FBI's facial recognition system is said to contain over 52 million images by 2015, a database that many say poses a threat to individuals privacy.
According to the Washington Times, the Electronic Frontier Foundation reported this information through records it obtained from a Freedom of Information Act request about the FBI's facial recognition database, Next Generation Identification.
The NGI is “capable of processing 55,000 direct photo enrollments daily and of conducting tens of thousands of searches every day,” says the records.
In 2012, the NGI obtained 13.6 million images, and by 2013, the number of images rose to 16 million.
By 2015, the Bureaus's database is expected to contain 46 million criminal images, 4.3 million civil images, 215,000 images from Repository for Individuals of Special Concern, 750,000 images from a “Special Population Cognizant” category, and 215,000 images from “New Repositories.”
With these images, the federal agency says it will be able to track down terrorists and criminals by facial images and “other forms of biometric identification like palm prints, iris scans, facial imaging, scars, marks, and tattoos.”
