Apr, 2014 : Canadians Arrest First Heartbleed Hacker
📅 - The Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested a 19-year old male on Tuesday for allegedly hacking into Canada's tax agency, making this the first arrest in connection with the Heartbleed bug, CNN reports.
Stephen Solis-Reyes was arrested at his home in London, Ontario where authorities say he used the Heartbleed bug to gain access to around 900 social insurance numbers from taxpayers in the country forcing the agency to shut down its servers to prevent further theft.
According to a press release from the RCMP, Solis-Reyes is facing one count of Unauthorized Use of Computer and one count of Mischief in Relation to Data.
“The RCMP treated this breach of security as a high priority case and mobilized the necessary resources to resolve the matter as quickly as possible. Investigators from National Division, along with our counterparts in “O” Division have been working tirelessly over the last four days analyzing data, following leads, conducting interviews, obtaining and executing legal authorizations and liaising with our partners,” said Assistant Commissioner Gilles Michaud.
This hack caused the Canada Revenue Agency to delay the tax return deadline by a week from April 30th to May 5th.
Solis-Reyes is expected to appear in an Ottawa court on July 17th, 2014.
