Jun, 2008 : Proofpoint Acquires SaaS Email Firm Fortiva

📅 June 24, 2008 - Email security and data loss prevention firm Proofpoint Inc. (proofpoint.com) announced Tuesday it has acquired on-demand email archiving company Fortiva Inc. (fortiva.com).

Broadening its base as a general email security service provider, Proofpoint expects the acquisition to strengthen its position in the Software-as-a-Service vendor market and email security through Fortiva's research in data loss prevention and email archiving.

Fortiva's SaaS suite addresses email storage, formal investigation legal discovery and regulatory compliance. Proofpoint says current Fortiva customers will notice no impact to their services, but the Fortiva Archiving Suite will be renamed Proofpoint Email Archiving in coming weeks.

While Fortiva's service appears to be designed specifically for use with Microsoft's Exchange and Outlook email programs, Proofpoint's email security gateway application, does not appear to be built to function with any one email application in particular.

Retaining all digitally-stored information is becoming more crucial to businesses. Email is a common target in courtroom legal discovery, driving rapid growth in the email archiving market since changes to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure that require electronic communications such as email be produced in a timely manner, placing the burden on businesses for litigation and regulatory purposes. According to Proofpoint research, nearly a quarter of large US companies in the past 12 months were ordered by court or other regulatory body to produce employee email. Proofpoint clearly's hopes to capitalize on this business need.

Founded by former Netscape Chief Technology Officer Eric Hahn, Proofpoint has been in operation since 2002 and has about 140 employees. The price of the acquisition was not disclosed. The comparatively small Toronto-based firm Fortiva has a staff of 40.

Proofpoint has posted an FAQ notice, with more information relating specifically to the Fortiva acquisition on its website.
