👈 Official Responses: 0) announced on Tuesday that after a successful year it has decided to share some of its profit with charities by giving gifts to fight cancer and to promote education in underdeveloped countries. The hosting provider donated $100,000 to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (mdanderson.org) in Houston, Texas and $25,000 to international organization, One Laptop per Child (laptop.org).


HostGator says its donation to Anderson, one of the country's largest cancer treatment centers, reflects the wishes of the HostGator staff as well as suggestions from its users and will end up going towards a variety of programs from research and clinical trials to education, counseling and treatments.

As for the donation to One Laptop per Child, HostGator says that if even one child furthers his knowledge in computers and makes a career out of it, the donation will have been worth every penny for the company. One Laptop per Child improves the educational opportunities for children in underdeveloped regions by giving every child access to an inexpensive, durable, Web-capable laptop. At $100 each, the gift from HostGator should provide at least 250 laptops, says the company.

"As a company, we expect to go on making charitable donations, and letting our people decide each year where our gifts should go," says Brent Oxley, president of HostGator. "We want the benefits of our success to go beyond our own narrow interests, so that's why we'll keep on doing it. Some other companies may donate for political reasons, not because they really want to help, but that's still good. Whatever the motives and whatever the amounts given, it all helps. The more corporate giving there is, the better."

Last month, Host Gator began offering 4,500 free Web templates to enable customers to create new websites or redesign existing ones.
