📅 December 5, 2006 - Email hosting provider Webmail.us (webmail.us) announced on Monday it has partnered with managed hosting provider Rackspace Managed Hosting (rackspace.com ) to help design, develop and deploy a new infrastructure to power Webmail's email hosting platform.

Webmail.us says the two companies are working closely to build an infrastructure platform that will accomplish three primary goals. The platform needs built-in redundancy at all levels of the configuration and must scale with the growth of the Webmail customer base. In addition, the cost of the overall platform needs to scale as it grows, especially as the demands for unlimited storage and bandwidth increase over time.

The company originally deployed its configuration on branded servers running Intel processors but found that the application depended heavily on the speed of the central processor and its ability to access the disk space quickly. The large servers had difficulty performing and also made it difficult to scale the application as the company grew. Webmail says it approached Rackspace for help in engineering an alternative hosting environment with many independent clusters of machines, each dedicated to a single process, such as spam filtering or POP3 and with server and network-level redundancy built into every application.

"Rackspace tapped into their deep expertise in working with numerous software-as-a-service vendors and showed us a new path to build a customized infrastructure that supports our specific needs," says Bill Boebel, chief technology officer at Webmail.us. "Our email hosting system is now powered by more than 175 servers, and we're adding close to a dozen per month. By hiring Rackspace to handle infrastructure operations and server management, we have built an architecture that can sustain our growth and enable us to focus on development of innovative email services."
