(verisign.com), a leading provider of Internet trust services, announced on Tuesday that MedUnite, a service company founded by seven leading US health plans that serve more than 54 million members and contract with 191,000 physicians, has chosen VeriSign's Healthcare Trust Services to secure its new online healthcare transaction service.

Using VeriSign's managed digital certificate services, MedUnite will connect physicians with insurers securely and in real time over the Internet, allowing them to digitally submit claims, check on claims status, verify patient eligibility and benefits and obtain referrals and authorizaton.
MedUnite says its goal is to make the business transactions involve in healthcare as easy as using an automated teller machine. By using VeriSign's services, the company says it can address privacy and security issues, and provide a solid trust infrastructure allowing customers to use the company's services confidently.
VeriSign's Healthcare Trust Services issue digital credentials that identify patients, physicians and trading partners online. The digital certificates allow encrypted communication and legally binding, valid digital signatures. Using the MedUnite service, physicians and payors can digitally sign referrals, authorizations and other documents requiring a signature, from an Internet browser.
According to VeriSign, the benefits of its Healthcare Trust Services include digital credentials for healthcare professionals, patients and administrators, risk management services, validation services allowing users to verify the identity of others and trusted authorization interoperability services that support requirements for the secure exchange of electronic data.
