(tucows.com), a leading provider of wholesale digital products to Internet service providers and Web hosting companies worldwide, announced on Tuesday that it has increased its market share for the registration of generic top level domain names by 2.6 percent in the first quarter of 2001.

According to Tucows, the company employs a wholesale distribution strategy, using more than 5,000 channel partners worldwide. Tucows says the wholesale strategy has led to a 14.5 percent share of the market in the first quarter of 2001, an increase of 2.6 percent from the fourth quarter of 2000.
The company says it has gained ground on the market leader VeriSign Inc. (verisign.com), which formerly held the monopoly on registrations for the .com, .net and .org extensions. Tucows handled 448,288 new registrations in the first quarter, surpassing Register.com Inc.'s approximately 377,000 registrations to take over the number two position behind VeriSign. The company says that when its 123,930 transfers of existing domains from other companies are considered, its performance was even stronger.
Tucows says it is pleased with the stability its channel has shown over the past quarter. The company believes that the best way to build its business is to work through its resellers to deliver its digital products and services to consumers.
