VERITAS Enhances Backup and Recovery of Windows Environments With Newest Backup Exec

📅 June 18, 2001 - VERITAS Software Corporation (veritas.com) today announced a new version of VERITAS Backup Exec for Microsoft Windows NT and Windows 2000, the company's leading data protection solution for workgroup and distributed departmental environments. The new version 8.6 of VERITAS Backup Exec adds sophisticated backup and recovery functions for new online and database applications running in Windows NT and Windows 2000 business environments, as well as new tools that improve the performance and management capabilities of backup operations.

The new version of VERITAS Backup Exec is the first complete software solution that integrates online data protection and recovery for Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server, a flexible portal that allows companies to easily find, share and publish information. The VERITAS Backup Exec Agent for Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server utilizes the native backup application program interface (API), which ensures reliable protection of the application.
Companies using Lotus Domino R5 server software will benefit from improvements to the optional Lotus Domino agent for VERITAS Backup Exec. This agent uses the Lotus backup API to provide online data protection for Lotus Domino R5 messaging and database servers that utilize either Archive or Circular Logging. Administrators can easily recover Lotus Domino server data with "point-in-time" restores which allows the rolling forward of the Lotus Domino Transaction Log to a specific date in time using the Archive Logs. Additional support includes protection of R4 databases and servers.
VERITAS Backup Exec now capitalizes on fast access times inherent in disk technology by providing the capability to back up to hard drives, network- attached storage (NAS) and RAID systems. This new feature compliments traditional tape-drive backups. A built-in software compression feature optimizes disk storage capacity, making backup to disk ideal for data staging operations performed in conjunction with regular, daily backups.
VERITAS Software has also enhanced its centralized monitoring tool, ExecView, with a new JAVA-based graphical user interface and Web-based functionality. With ExecView, users can now monitor VERITAS Backup Exec servers deployed on Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Novell NetWare operating systems via a Web console from any PC with a Web browser.
