AT&T Expands Internet Portfolio With Purchase Of Bird On A Wire Networks
📅 - AT&T Canada announced the extension of its services portfolio today after purchasing Bird On A Wire Networks (boaw.com) last week.
Terms of the deal, which was announced last Wednesday, were not disclosed.
Bird On A Wire, one of Canada's first managed hosting companies, specializes in high-end hosting services like dedicated, co-located and managed hosting. With the purchase, AT&T inherits a client base that includes a number of notable companies, including Famous Players movie cinemas, and a 30,000 square foot data center in Mississauga, Ontario.
With the purchase, AT&T says it will be able to "enhance its ability to provide fully managed hosting for mission critical Internet applications for eBusiness and IP-based networking." Previous to the purchase of Bird On A Wire, AT&T offered only server co-location services at its three data centres located in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. AT&T says the acquisition of Bird On A Wire will allow the company to expand its current hosting offerings to include managed hardware and managed software. This includes entry-level server co-location, complete managed hardware, managed software solutions, load balancing, server monitoring and storage solutions.
"This is another important step forward for AT&T Canada,'' said Mike Kologinski, Senior Vice President, Internet and eBusiness Services, AT&T Canada. "As the market changes, the demand for managed hosting services is intensifying. Adding these capabilities to our existing portfolio will allow us to significantly expand our presence in the managed hosting space quickly and efficiently. This further strengthens our position as a leader in Internet and eBusiness services. Now we can provide customers with additional assistance, as they simplify their operations by outsourcing the management of their Internet applications to AT&T Canada."
AT&T Canada is the second phone company in recent months to enter the Canadian managed hosting market. Calgary-based telecom TELUS recently announced it would pick up the Canadian assets of troubled American ISP PSINet. The deal, which is still subject to regulatory approval, will see TELUS pick up approximately 50 points-of-presence, or Internet connection facilities that serve most major Canadian markets, and a state-of-the-art data center in Toronto. The company also plans to unveil an additional Calgary center in early July.
