Amphus Introduces Ultra-Dense Server Based On Intel Low-Voltage Processors

📅 - Amphus Inc. (amphus.com) today announced a joint agreement with Intel Corporation (intel.com) to deliver low-power, ultra-dense servers for data center environments. Based on Intel's low-voltage processors, Amphus says its Virgo ultra-dense server platform is a fully manufacturable design that enables OEMs to deliver ultra-dense server products, with fast time-to-market and virtually zero R&D investment.

As a part of the agreement, Amphus and Intel will jointly promote the Virgodesign to both OEMs and ODMs. Amphus will enable its ODM partners to startvolume production of Virgo-based products by the fourth quarter of thisyear.
The rapid growth of the Internet and the resulting proliferation of serverinfrastructures have caused power consumption and rack space utilization tobecome significant operational cost components for data centers. Low power,ultra-dense servers have emerged to help address the needs of these crowded, power hungry data centers by consuming less power and rack space thantraditional servers.
The Virgo ultra-dense platform offers data centers high "performance perrack," and "performance per watt" through the use of Amphus' patent-pendingDistributed Server Power Management technology (DSPM). The company saysthis enables service providers, hosting companies, Web site operators andenterprises to reduce their server operating costs by up to 85 percent.
"We evaluated currently available low-power processors for the Virgoplatform and, through rigorous testing, we concluded that Intel'slow-voltage processors deliver the best balance of performance and powerconsumption today," said Henry Fung, Amphus' chairman and CEO. "Theseprocessors not only meet our power and performance requirements, but alsoenable our current Virgo solution to offer server-class features, such asECC memory support, and will allow future versions to offer SMP capability."
Designed for mission-critical environments, the Virgo ultra-dense platformintegrates up to 16 independent low-power servers (server blades), dualEthernet switches and dual management servers, all within a 2U (rack units),standard 19-inch-width form factor. It delivers breakthrough server density(up to 336 servers per 42U rack) and dramatically lower power consumption.Virgo server blades are based on low-voltage Intel processors, planned forlaunch in the fourth quarter of this year.
