Sep, 2001 : Colubris Unveils IPSec and L2TP for Wireless LAN Routers
📅 - Quebec's Colubris Networks Inc. (colubris.com), a leading manufacturer of secure wireless LAN routers and public area Internet access has announced the availability of IPSec and L2TP forits CN1050 range of secure wireless LAN routers. Thesenew security features will be released in earlyOctober and will be a free upgrade to all existingCN1050 customers.
"We are redefining wireless LAN security," said PierreTrudeau, president of Colubris. "Colubris Networks isthe first company to solve the security problemsplaguing most wireless installations. Our approachuses industry-standard methods to secure wirelesstraffic for worry-free computing."
WEP, the current solution for wireless LAN security, has recently been in the news again with the releaseof a simple tool to break its encryption and snoopwireless traffic. As the flaws in the design of thisprotocol continue to expose wireless installations toeavesdropping risks, many industry experts recommendthe use of an external virtual private networkingserver to provide strong access control and security.Although this strategy protects access to thecorporate backbone, it does not safeguard the wirelesstraffic being transmitted between client stations anda wireless access point. To eliminate thisvulnerability requires security initiatives thataddress the entry points into a network.
"I am not surprised to see that our competitors arestruggling with the issues surrounding wireless LANsecurity," said Tony Rossiter, Executive vicepresident of Colubris Networks. "Our architecturefocus has always been centered on WLAN security andthis enables us to add new security features quicklyand effectively. We are closely following thedevelopments of the IEEE 802.11i committee and whatother groups are recommending and will implement theirrecommendations accordingly."
"As Gartner pointed out in their July 5th reporttitled Deploying Safe Wireless LANs, using provensecurity protocols such as IPSec and L2TP is criticalto securing wireless LANs," said John Pescatore VP andResearch Director for Net work Security at GartnerInc. "The business impact of wireless LANs can betotally wiped out by the security holes in the initialimplementation. Integrated VPN and high securityfeatures directly into the wireless access point isthe direction in which we believe the market mustmove."
Colubris Networks will be demonstrating its wirelessLAN VPN capabilities at Networld+Interop in Atlanta(Booth # 1953) and Paris (Booth # H48P) in Sept.
