📅 - Despite the devastation caused by Tuesday morning's terrorist attacks on two major U.S. cities, the Internet continued to operate at close to normal levels, said a report released later in the day.
Matrix.Net, regarded as one of the Internet's most established performance measuring organizations released an event advisory stating that shortly after the attacks, the company ?detected a significant performance degradation of major Internet infrastructure points and Web sites,? indicated by an increase in packet loss and a decrease in reliability.
The advisory went on to say, however, that ?while the spike was significant, it was relatively short-lived,? and that IP traffic returned to within close to normal levels within about an hour.
Though throughout the day, many of the Internet's major news-related sites have either been down or responding very slowly, many being forced to replace their regular content with lower-bandwidth files, Matrix.Net says the slowdown is more likely caused by large numbers of users overburdening the servers, or direct damage to the equipment from the attacks, rather than by infrastructure outages among major ISPs.
Matrix.Net's announcement said the Internet, designed to withstand stresses, was functioning well under what it called ?the greatest stress encountered over its 32-year history (including predecessor networks).?
In fact, the Internet remained so reliable that many users reported the ability to effectively communicate through email with people in the area of the attacks, while other means of contact, like telephones, were not operating.
