📅 September 12, 2001 - Hewlett-Packard Company (hp.com) announced software,hardware and services that is meant to enable customers to more effectivelymanage and optimize their network storage environments.

These offerings accelerate HP's Federated Storage Area Management (FSAM)strategy to allow customers to manage and scale their storage by a factor often without adding additional people.
"Data availability is the issue that keeps data center managers up atnight," said Gill Rickards, general manager, HP Services Storage SupportDivision. "In response, HP has moved beyond simply relying on redundanttechnology and repair services to providing support capabilities thatanticipate data management needs and deliver superior information access."
HP OpenView Storage Accountant software enables enterprise customers andservice providers to meter storage usage for financial analysis throughcharge-back and cost recovery. Charge-back allows resources to be used moreproductively by helping to identify services that are being provided but arenot needed. By establishing service levels and tiered pricing, organizationscan effectively align network storage use with business value and needs.
HP says the OpenView Storage Allocater v2 software significantly improvesthe ability to access control between hosts and storage, helping companiesget the most out of their investment in people and infrastructure. Thesoftware allows customers to remove, reassign or add storage quickly fromwithin a shared pool of multi-vendor JBOD, RAID and tape devices, as well asmanage hundreds of host devices, thousands of LUNS and multiple fibrechannel fabrics. The software supports Windowsâ 2000 in addition to HP-UX,Solaris and Linux.
The compact HP Surestore 181GB disk drive provides high performance andcapacity in a small footprint. For example, the HP Surestore Disk ArrayXP512 - when integrated with the HP Surestore 181GB disk drive - can scalefrom 37 terabytes to 93 TB using the same amount of floor space.
The HP Surestore Tape Library 10/100, manufactured exclusively by HP, isalso scalable, growing from 3.2 TB to 10 TB. The tape library supports fibrechannel or SCSI connectivity as well as DLT 8000, Ultrium or SDLT drives.
HP's storage services focus on achieving "zero downtime" and increasedperformance for HP Surestore products across HP-UX, Solaris, Linux andWindows operating platforms.
HP Premier Storage Critical Support guarantees qualified customers100 percent data availability and accessibility for the HP Surestore XP diskarray family.HP Storage Critical Support for the HP Surestore XP disk arrayfamily, included with this product family, has been expanded to includeanalysis, design, implementation and testing services; remote monitoring,investigation and resolution of potential problems; and a designated expertstorage support team.HP Storage Support for Virtual Arrays delivers maintenance,technical analysis and change management services to anticipate and meetbusiness information needs.
The HP Surestore 181GB disk drive and HP storage support services areexpected to be available in September, while the HP OpenView StorageAccountant software and HP OpenView Storage Allocater v2 software areexpected to be available in October. The HP Surestore Tape Library 10/100 isexpected to be available in November.
