Dec, 2001 : IBM Introduces Online Shop for Hermitage Museum

📅 - Exclusive gifts made by Russian artisans are now available via the online shop created by IBM (ibm.com) for the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia (shop.hermitagemuseum.org). The shop features both traditional items, such as jewelry and books, as well as reproductions from the Hermitage collection made by well-known Russian artisans for the site.

In conjunction with curators from the Museum, an international team of IBMe-business experts designed the shop to educate visitors about originalworks of art from the Hermitage collection while they browse the productofferings. The shop is an extension of the museum's Web site, whichincorporates images of the luxurious State Hermitage Museum as banners andbackdrops for the virtual museum. The interior of the State HermitageMuseum, considered a work of art in itself, also provides the setting forthe online shop.
Demonstrating the tie between the museum site and the online shop, the"Curator Recommendations" section includes suggestions about items thatillustrate or complement the museum's collections. The CuratorRecommendations offer visitors a virtual art-history lesson, with extensivelinks back to the museum site.
IBM's e-commerce project with the State Hermitage Museum continues a jointeffort begun in 1997 with a $2 million technology grant by IBM that createda virtual museum to showcase its works of art. The result earned severalawards and positioned the Hermitage as one of the most technologicallyadvanced museums in the world.
"We are delighted to work with IBM on another successful project thatdemonstrates the potential of the Internet to bring unique Russian treasuresto people all over the world," said Dr. Mikhail Piotrovsky, director of theState Hermitage Museum. "One of our goals with the new online shop was tomaintain the beautiful artistry of the museum site, its educationalcomponent, and the kinds of details that make it distinctly Russian."
Business Innovation Services consultants from IBM Global Services teams inToronto, Chicago and Atlanta worked with their counterparts in Russia tocreate the e-commerce site in three months using a rapid implementationmethodology.
