📅 February 28, 2002 - Rackspace Managed Hosting (rackspace.com ) has announced itwas chosen to provide hosting to Crimereports.com, a project currently inuse by multiple police departments nationwide to improve communication withmembers of the public. Originally founded in 1999, Crimereports.com wasexpanded to involve citizens in protecting their communities in the wake ofthe terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Currently in use in Washington, D.C., Arlington, Virginia, and severallocalities in Utah, Crimereports.com provides a forum for citizens to getinvolved in safeguarding their communities by allowing them to submit crimeor terrorist tip-offs to local law enforcement agencies instantly andanonymously. The system also serves as a community notification system,providing a vehicle through which police departments can send out crimereports, alerts, photos and other information using email and the Internet.
"Crimereports.com has been an invaluable tool for the Metropolitan PoliceDepartment in Washington, DC, to get useful information out to the communityin a timely and efficient manner," said Kevin P. Morison, the MPD's directorof corporate communications. "Our whole philosophy of community policing ispredicated on the easy and open exchange of information between police andcommunity."
After the attacks on Sept. 11, Crimereports.com received numerous inquiriesabout its service, prompting the company to explore alternatives for hostingthe site externally. Although the company originally planned to build itsown data center to house the servers needed to accommodate the huge increasein site traffic, it ultimately decided that the timeframe was too compressedto allow it.
After reviewing numerous potential hosting partners, Crimereports.comselected Rackspace. Greg Whisenant, executive director of Crimereports.com,said, "Performance and reliability are critical for this project. Westrongly believe that a relationship with the community is a key part offighting crime, and clearly, we are looking for the highest qualityinfrastructure we can find to support it. We feel that using Rackspace willallow us to launch the sophisticated Web site that we need withoutcompromising our quality of service."
