Jul, 2002 : Easynet Buys Energis?s German Hosting Unit
📅 - British telecommunications firm Easynet Group Plc (Easynet.com -> gtt.net) announced on Friday that it has purchased a German Web hosting business, majority-owned by competitor Energis.
According to Easynet, the company paid approximately $3.4 million in cash for the Web hosting assets of Ision. The company went into administration after its parent company encountered financial troubles. Easynet says it expects the purchase to accelerate the company's progress toward breaking even in Germany in 2003. The British firm says it generated about a quarter of its 70 million pounds in group revenue last year in continental Europe, but was forced to pull out of start-up businesses in Italy and Switzerland. The acquisition supplies Easynet with 100 staff at Ision's fully equipped data centers, which host sites for 190 corporate customers in Germany. Easynet says it expects the new clients to generate 9.4 million pounds in annualized revenue.

📅 - EasyNet to Cut 90 Jobs - EasyNet (easynet.com -> gtt.net), a pan-European ISP, has cut 90 jobs or 10 percent of its total workforce from its wholesale division, blaming the "cautious operating environment in wholesale capacity." The cuts are part of a cost-cutting strategy which says will save it around £10 million per year. Despite the announcement, the company is optimistic about the rest of the year's prospects, reported the UK's Register. It says that DSL is the "cornerstone" for its strategy, adding more than 9,000 new broadband connections last year resulting in a threefold increase in monthly revenues from DSL, up from £3.3 million in Jan. 2001 to £9.6 million a month by Dec. 2001.
