Nov, 2002 : October Netcraft Survey Results Released

📅 - Internet research organization Netcraft (netcraft.com) released the results of its Web server survey for the month of October on Friday, showing that very little change took place in the Web server market during the month.

Market share in the Web server developer market, which is led by Apache, followed by Microsoft, remained almost unchanged during October
One market showing significant changes, says Netcraft, is the SSL certificate market, which has seen upstart SSL provider Geotrust gather 10 percent of the market in the past three years, cutting into the 99 percent share held by VeriSign following the purchase of Thawte.
In the last few months, however, newcomer Comodo has gained 1 percent of the market by offering prices lower than Geotrust?s. As a result, other providers such as Entrust and Globalsign have reduced prices, renewing their efforts to cut into VeriSign's dominance.
VeriSign, meanwhile, has focused on raising profits rather than defend each point of market share, actually raising prices at Thawte. Today, VeriSign has more than 400,000 active server certificates.
Despite the continued success of VeriSign, says Netcraft, the SSL market is the most competitive it has been in years.
Following last month's survey, says Netcraft, Web hosting firm Superb Internet performed an upgrade, migrating a significant number of systems to Solaris 9. Netcraft says its latest data shows Superb running more Solaris 9 sites than the rest of the Internet combined.
