I've been with Netfirms for over 4 years and currently have 3 BUSINESS web hosting accounts with multiple domains in each account. I did extensive research before I signed up with Netfirms and have been generally happy with the feature set, pricing and service & support. Sure once in a while they have problems, but all web hosting companies do. During 2010 they went through a data centre migration which wasn't without a few glitches, but my issue was resolved fairly quickly after I contacted them.
The reason I felt compelled to post this review is to let everyone know that Netfirms has been sold and will be moved to the US. (Another data centre move within 12 months!) This was revealed in an e-mail curiously entitled "Netfirms Is Moving to a New Hosting Platform". This e-mail was sent by CEO Thomas Savundra on March 2, 2011.
It was all typical marketing fluff and nonsense about vision and passion, until near the end where he states "...one of the top web hosting and domain management teams in the industry has acquired the Netfirms hosting and domain business." He then goes on "...will take effect on April 1, 2011. When customer accounts are migrated to the new hosting platform, which is located in the United States and managed by the new owners".
This is significant to me since one of the key hosting selection criteria is location!
I run my web design and web hosting business in Canada and my websites are for Canadian businesses, so my sites and data must be hosted in Canada unimpeded by any potential cross-border data flow restrictions that may be imposed by the US government.
I suspect the data centre location may not be as important to everyone, but it is to me.
So after more than 3 years I'm not a happy customer any more as I am now faced with having to find a new hosting company in Canada.
The sale and impending move came totally out of left field and to add insult to injury I'm given only 30 days notice!
