I use to have a static web site with simple HTML code that was hosted at Netfirms. Good response and never really had an issue. This was back in 2006. So when I recently decided to launch a new site and take advantage of a Content Management System I decided to stay with Netfirms. However, using Netfirms hosting has been a nightmare.
Friday May 21, 2010 – Created my new site online. No issues.
Sunday May 23, 2010 – Installed Joomla using their control panel. Unloaded my Joomla templet and started building my site. Very easy and simple to use.
Friday May 28, 2010 – Sent support ticket about 500 errors and timeouts while just uploading content.
Saturday May 29, 2010 – Got first reply that they got my ticket and were looking into the issue. No ETA
Friday June 4, 2010 - Sent another ticket for very slow response times and time out errors on my site.
Saturday June 5, 2010 – My site went down. Called support center to get answer as to why my site was down and why they have not responded to my tickets. Was told there was nothing they could do. I was on an old server at an old data center. But this was a brand new web site! I ask why was it staged on an old server? You think they would have just installed my new site on the new servers back in May? Tech had no real answer for me.
Wednesday June 9, 2010 – Got my second reply from support team. They told me they were going to move my site to a new data center but gave no ETA. Also said they were able to move my (very small) database to a better server but I will still see some issues until I can get moved to the new data center. Was told I should contact the “Netfirms Care Team” to voice any complaints. (Which I did, by email)
Saturday June 19, 2010 – Site down again, sent email to support. Never heard anything from the “Netfirm Care Team”.
Thursday June 24 2010 – Site down again. When it finally came back up I had 5 days of data loss. Images and code was missing and file changes gone. Tried to call Support but saw the number was removed from Netfirm’s web site. After finding the number on a review site I reported my issues. 18 hours later, very late in the day I called back again to get an update, turns out my site was migrated to the new data center but I still had data loss.
Friday June 20, 2010 – Data was restored but configuration files with path and host names were not updated during the migration to the new servers. Caused a lot of extra work all the while my site could still not serve users. At least my site was now at the new data center.
Thursday July 29, 2010 – Site down again. Even at the new data center on *new servers Netfirms can’t keep it up and running. Tried calling support and get a busy single. Very scary feeling.
Netfirms may be able to host simple static web sites with basic html and images, but anything more complex they are simply not reliable. Support and Communication is horrible and over the course of the last 2 months I now wish I would have gone somewhere else. I would not host a business web site of any size here again.
