For years I have had a personal 'paid to be hosted' web site on Freeservers / MySpace. It has grown to about 100 pages. Each page has a proprietary access counter. All counters have one line in a file on the root called fscount.js (it is not a Javascript file though, but a simple text file).

Late last year I was monitoring the access to some new pages, and wondering why the counters were not working. I investigated and found that the fscount.js file had what looked like corrupted entries.

The updating mechanism was opening the file, locating the respective counter line, extracting the current value, increasing this by one, modifying the line to the new value, and then saving the file. All simple stuff. And this process is something that should have coped with concurrent updates as different pages were accessed at the same time. As I said it is a small site of 100 pages = 100 counters.

Now I used to be a professional website supporter for a major UK company. And we were always of the opinion that servers should NOT - at any time - EVER - corrupt files.

Yet I have had a string of emails over the last three months to/from Freeserver's Technical Support about this. Yet they will not admit that there is a problem. I have sent them details of the entries on fscount.js showing that at least 50 of the counters have become corrupted. Some of the entries refer to URLs that have come from pages on other members sites!! The issue has been escalated to a Technical Support Team time and again, but again they will not (cannot?) explain what is going wrong.

Frankly I think that Freeservers technical staff are covering there ar$es because corruption of any file on any server is not a good thing. And its easier to blame the customer than admit that there is a problem.

But worse was to come. The access log file(s) for my site are show similar corruption with spurious entries again from other people's web sites. They refer to paths to files that have never ever been part of my web site. They refer to pages that have never been on my site.

Again Freeservers technical staff are continuing to deny that there is a problem and that - somehow but without details - implying that it is all my fault.

But to have log file(s) go corrupt is bad for business. My site is a hobby site. But if I was running a business and being billed or billingothers basedon information from access log files I would not be happy.

This issue raises quations about Freeservers integrity not only with regards to its servers, but also its technical support, and its attitude towards paying customers when things go wrong. Bad, very bad, and very unprofessional.
