I'd rented one or two dedicated servers from eSecureData in July 2006 and left less than a year later to go to colocation with a competitor. At the time, they were a low-cost provider, with the cheapest servers at the time (a "Generation 2" which was 64 bit Intel, 1 CPU, 2 cores) costing about $60/month. The pricing looked attractive initially, but the supposedly "unmetered" bandwidth is anything but... use too much and they will slow your site to a crawl, almost as if they were throttling you - and they don't tell you where the limits are. There was no remote reboot or remote management by any means - if the server crashed, an e-mail to 'support' would go unread until 9AM their local time... which is noon in Montréal and Toronto, 5PM in London, 6PM à Paris. There were no colocation options on offer, and the servers they were renting at the time (this was 2006) were too slow to be useful for database-intensive "Web 2.0"-style applications. They were also prone to do all of their billing of Canadian clients in US dollars.

And then there was the infamous "Adopt-a-Server" programme. Supposedly, under this scheme, you could make a one-time payment (which was at least a thousand bucks) and, every month for nominally five years, they would pay out half the monthly rental price of one specific server type listed on their website. (Contrary to what the name suggests, the programme doesn't actually transfer ownership of the actual server to you.) Only one problem... if halfway through the five-year term, eSecureData stopped offering that particular server model for rent, the cheques just as abruptly stopped. The company would then offer to "buy" these obligations back for pennies on the dollar - but they were otherwise worthless.

I don't know if eSecureData still runs this way (this was 2006) and don't particularly care to find out. Once bitten, twice shy.
