I had a very disappointing experience with Contabo.
I ordered a VPS and paid for it upfront. Instead of receiving the service in a normal and timely manner, my order was put on hold and Contabo requested identity verification only after accepting the payment.
I had used Contabo services before without any abuse, spam, phishing, unpaid debt, chargeback, or policy violation. My previous services were simply cancelled/expired normally. I also previously had separate personal and business-related account usage, which is a normal situation. However, after placing a new order, Contabo treated the order as suspicious and demanded additional personal documents.
The main issue is not only the verification itself. The problem is the whole process:
payment was accepted first;
the VPS was not provided after payment;
verification was requested only after payment;
communication was slow and unclear;
support responses felt generic and did not properly address the complaint;
I had to spend a lot of time and effort to get a clear resolution.
Eventually, Contabo refunded the payment, but a refund does not fix the poor customer experience, the wasted time, and the lack of clear communication.
In my opinion, if verification can block service activation, this should be clearly communicated before payment, not after the customer has already paid.
I cannot recommend Contabo based on this experience.
