Azure is Microsoft’s global public cloud platform, in the same category as AWS and Google Cloud, but with extremely tight integration into Windows, Active Directory, Office/Microsoft 365 and the wider Microsoft ecosystem. It is not a classic web host with cPanel plans; it is a full IaaS, PaaS and serverless environment designed for everything from side projects to very large enterprise systems.
Underneath, Azure runs on a worldwide grid of regions and datacenters, giving one of the broadest footprints in the industry. Each region consists of one or more datacenters tied together with high-capacity, low-latency links, and many regions are split into Availability Zones – physically separate facilities in the same metro – so applications can survive the loss of an entire building if they are architected that way.
From a hosting point of view, several Azure services matter most:
- Azure App Service (Web Apps) – a fully managed platform for websites and APIs. You push code or containers; the platform deals with OS patching, scaling up and out, load balancing, SSL, deployment slots and integration with databases and storage. This is the closest piece to "managed hosting".
- Azure Virtual Machines – classic VM-style compute, effectively cloud VPS and dedicated sizes. You control the OS and stack, choosing from many instance families (general purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, GPU, etc.) and several disk types (standard HDD, SSD, Premium SSD, Ultra).

- Azure Functions – serverless functions billed per execution, suitable for event-driven workloads and background tasks without maintaining servers.
- Supporting services – such as Azure SQL Database, Azure Database for PostgreSQL and MySQL, Cosmos DB, Azure Storage (blob, file, queue, table), Azure CDN, Azure DNS, Azure Front Door and Application Gateway. These cover databases, storage, content delivery, DNS, global traffic management, WAF and more.
All of this is managed through a single Azure Portal, plus APIs and command-line tools, so it is easy to mix App Service sites, VMs, containers, serverless and managed databases in one subscription.
The whole platform is heavily localized, with the website and portal available in many languages and pricing shown in multiple currencies depending on the billing region. In practice, Azure behaves like a local provider in many countries, even though the platform itself is global.
In short, Azure is a cloud infrastructure and platform environment, not a shared hosting company. It fits best when there is a need to design an architecture and choose services, not just upload a single site to a panel.
💰 Price & Cost
Azure pricing is built around pay-as-you-go: you are charged for what you actually consume, with options to save money through longer-term commitments.
The main components are:
- Free tier / trial – new customers can start with a limited-time credit plus a selection of services that are free for the first year and a longer list that are always free at low usage. This is enough to experiment with small web apps and databases.
- On-demand (pay-as-you-go) – most services are billed per second or per hour of compute, per GB of storage, per GB of outbound traffic, or per transaction/operation. You can scale up and down or shut things off to stop charges.
- Reservations and savings plans – by committing to use specific compute resources (for example, a VM family in a region) for one or three years, you can significantly reduce the price versus pure on-demand. When used correctly, this is often the difference between Azure being "expensive" and "cost-effective".
- Pricing calculator – Microsoft provides a detailed calculator where you can define a region, select services and quantities, and receive a monthly cost estimate before deploying anything.
For Azure App Service, pricing is divided into tiers such as Free, Shared, Basic, Standard, Premium and higher. The Free and Shared tiers are mainly for testing; production use typically starts from Standard upward, where you get dedicated compute, autoscale, backups, deployment slots and better SLAs. You pay for the App Service plan, not per individual site, meaning multiple websites and APIs can run in the same plan if resources allow.
Payment methods include credit and debit cards for most self-service accounts and invoicing / wire transfers for enterprise agreements. The exact options depend on country and contract type, but major international card brands are generally accepted.
There is no simple "30-day money-back guarantee" like at shared hosts. You can cancel subscriptions and delete resources at any time, which stops new charges, but usage that has already accrued is not automatically refunded. For long-term reservations, Microsoft allows exchanges and limited refunds within certain monetary caps over a 12-month window, so there is some flexibility if capacity planning changes.
Effectively, Azure is transparent but complex on price: every service has clear meters, but the number of services and options can be overwhelming. - Virtual Machines – a single VM using premium storage may carry an SLA around 99.9% connectivity; placing multiple VMs in an availability set or across zones increases the SLA, with multi-zone deployments reaching four-nines territory.
- App Service – production-grade tiers usually come with SLAs around the high "three-nines" range for running web apps, provided they follow best practices.
When SLAs are not met, compensation takes the form of service credits on the bill, not cash refunds, so uptime guarantees are essentially financial penalties in the form of credits.
On top of availability, Microsoft invests heavily in security, compliance and sustainability: physical security controls, a long list of certifications (ISO, SOC, PCI and many others), and programs aimed at running datacenters on renewable energy and reducing carbon impact.
For someone hosting websites or applications, this translates into a very robust, global foundation, but it is still up to the customer to choose regions, zones, backups and failover strategies correctly to benefit from it.
✍️ Customer Support
Azure support is built around support plans layered on the base platform (which is monitored 24/7 and has extensive documentation and community resources).
The main levels are:
- Basic – included with every subscription. Covers billing and subscription issues, status dashboards and documentation. There is no guaranteed technical support from engineers for production incidents.
- Developer – aimed at development and test environments, with technical support during business hours and slower response times. It is relatively inexpensive and useful for teams starting out.
- Standard – targeted at production workloads. Provides 24/7 technical support with fast response for critical incidents, including initial responses measured in minutes for the highest severity.
- Professional Direct (and higher enterprise options) – meant for mission-critical environments. Includes faster responses, escalation management, advisory services and a more engaged account team.
Support requests are initiated from the Azure Portal. You choose the subscription, service, problem type and severity; Azure routes the case to the appropriate team, and communication continues via email, portal updates and sometimes phone or chat, depending on the plan.
Besides paid support, there is a large documentation library, official learning paths, a Q&A community, and a status page that shows the current health of services and regions. Azure also maintains support presence on social channels, which can help with quick triage or guidance.
Overall, support is structured and SLA-driven, focused on resolving platform and configuration issues within defined response times. It is not a "do everything for you" model; customers still need in-house or partner expertise to design and operate complex workloads.
🔨 Control Panel
Azure comes with its own control surface and tooling stack:
