-> softlayer.com -> ibm.com), a Dallas-based provider of managed hosting and data center services, said today that it has signed a reseller agreement with North Carolina-based Red Hat, Inc. (redhat.com) to deliver Red Hat Enterprise Linux in a hosted environment.

Lance Crosby, chief operating officer for The Planet, said the company plans to deploy 12,000 Linux-based servers in the first year of the agreement.
According to Crosby, the offering should drive the company's revenue growth.
"We expect to see immediate demand for Red Hat Enterprise Linux," Crosby said. "It will provide our customers additional security features, support and third-party hardware and software certifications, and allows us to continue to deliver the most cost-effective managed hosting solution in the industry, from entry-level to the enterprise."
Crosby added that about 60 percent of the company's installed base already uses some version of Red Hat consumer products. He said this made the decision to migrate to Enterprise Linux a "logical selection."
"The Planet's hosting environment offers enterprise customers an additional global channel to obtain Red Hat Enterprise Linux," said Alex Pinchev, executive vice president of worldwide sales at Red Hat. "We look forward to working with The Planet to broaden the expansion of Linux in the enterprise."
