Under the plan, contact centers in Harrisburg, PA, Roseville, CA, San Jose, CA, and Pasadena, CA will be closed. The call-center staff at the company's Atlanta headquarters will be reduced. The company said the cutting of 1,300 jobs, which represents 40 percent of Earthlink's staff, was necessary in order for Earthlink to compete with market leaders AOL and MSN. Earthlink, who already outsources the bulk of its billing, sales and customers support calls, said it would outsource the customer support functions lost with the closures and staff reductions.
