📅 - Dedicated Web hosting provider EV1Servers (ev1servers.net) continues to grow, adding more than 85,000 hostnames on dedicated Linux servers since March, according to research and analysis firm Netcraft (netcraft.com).
The steady growth has continued despite the forecasts of many analysts, who predicated that there would be a mass exodus of Linux customers from EV1Servers due to its controversial decision to pay Unix licensing rights to the SCO Group (sco.com), a decision that angered the open source community.
The SCO Group claims that code in the Linux kernel violates its intellectual copyrights. It has threatened to sue companies running Linux, offering them licenses in order to avoid possible legal action. EV1Servers, which hosts over 18,000 dedicated servers in its data centers, announced in March that it had agreed to pay licensing fees to SCO. Robert Marsh, CEO of EV1Servers defended the measure as necessary to help its customers avoid legal costs.
Netcraft's numbers, however, show that the mass exodus has failed to materialize and EV1Servers has continued to grow. Netcraft said that while many Linux supporters voiced their displeasure with the decision, the high cost of switching hosting providers and the general resistance to migration without a compelling rationale played a role in preventing customers from leaving.
In March, approximately 43,000 hostnames switched from EV1Servers, according to Netcraft's analysis. In April, 37,000 moved and in May and June, the number was 45,000. The numbers however, were only slightly higher than the 28,000 that moved in January and February, the months immediately preceding the announcement.
According to Netcraft, EV1Servers is the fourth-largest Linux host, measured by number of hostnames, trailing 1&1 Internet (oneandone.com 👉 Total Reviews: 1
