-> softlayer.com -> ibm.com)said on Thursday that it had introduced OZONE, a security solution thatimplements an access control list on clients' virtual local areanetwork interfaces, protecting against attacks targeting unused TCP andUDP ports.

According to The Planet, unusedapplications and services created during operating system installationleaves TCP/UDP ports exposed, making them susceptible to attack. OZONEalleviates this problem, using ACLs to filter out unwanted trafficthrough those ports and creating a mechanism for security policydefinition.

"OZONE lets our customers lock down theirservers to allow only common Internet ports that their servers need tofunction, and no more," says Ric Moseley, vice president of engineeringfor The Planet. "New system and network vulnerabilities are discovereddaily. The Planet's dedicated security engineers continually reviewsInternet threats and can add or remove ports for OZONE customers thatare at risk of attack."

OZONE is priced at $20 per VLAN. Thecompany says solutions like OZONE are a part of the company's strategyof providing multi-tiered, high-end security systems that would be tooexpensive for their customers to purchase independently.
