Internet Numbering Authority Chooses VeriSign for Core DNS Support
VeriSign's Secondary Name Server Hosting, a part of the company's suite of managed DNS services, will be used to provide secondary name server support to ARIN's zones for inverse address mapping.
VeriSign's Managed DNS Services suite makes use of the expertise the company has gained managing the .com, .net and .org zones, with over 28 million names and 2.5 billion queries per day.
The Secondary Name Server Hosting service is designed to allow customers to outsource the management of their DNS name servers to VeriSign and provides a service level agreement guaranteeing 100% availability of the customer's DNS data. The service allows customers to host their DNS data on up to eight name servers, located in Asia, Europe and the US, for improved performance.
According to ARIN, inverse address mapping, the process of performing IP address-to-domain name resolution, is a critical element of the Internet's functionality. The company says it wanted a partner who could provide the level of attention the process deserves.
Through the Secondary Name Server Hosting servce, VeriSign sends a company's DNS information to a globally distributed network of name servers. The servers then answer all queries for data in the zone, providing solid performance and geographical distribution. The service also offers a screening option that identifies configuration errors in the customer's data that might adversely affect operations before that data is transferred to the VeriSign servers.
