) said this week that it is investigating an incident between AITdomains's (aitdomains.com) registrar system and the Public Information Registry (pir.org), which resulted in dozens of .org domains being deleted and placed in redemption. The investigation is being conducted in conjunction with ICANN. PIR is the operator of the .org registry.
"Every effort is being made to find out what went wrong and to fix it as quickly as possible," says Clarence Briggs, CEO of AIT. "In the meantime, AIT is offering a free secondary TLD to affected customers to serve as a redundant hosted mirror until this problem is settled." AIT says it asked the PIR to immediately restore service to all affected customers while the issue is being resolved. However AIT says PIR has not restored service, claiming customers are obliged to pay a restoration fee for each impacted domain.  AIT countered, saying extraordinary circumstances justified an exception. "It is difficult to believe that any Registrar would delete that many paying customer domains at once, especially domains that have yet to expire," says Briggs.  AIT says it is assisting affected customers and doing limited restorations at its own expense. The company did not disclose details of the investigation and did not speculate as to what may have happened. PIR did not immediately return calls requesting comment.
