84% of the web industry call for AI regulation as use outpaces policy
📅 - 84% of the web industry call for AI regulation as use outpaces policyAs renewed calls for clear AI policy grow, a survey from web hosting provider 20i reveals that 84% of the web industry believes AI needs government regulation, amid the absence of comprehensive federal legislation in the U.S.
Support for regulation was high across all roles, from 83% of web designers to 88% of copywriters, indicating widespread agreement across the web sector and highlighting the industry’s recognition of AI as a time-sensitive issue requiring oversight.
As new warnings about AI safety continue to emerge, and as use becomes commonplace, more than half (56%) worry about ethical misuse. Despite concerns, more than three quarters (79%) use AI tools at least once per week.
Across sectors, professionals are increasingly adopting AI in the workplace, with few guardrails or workplace oversight. AI leaders and political leaders are encouraging the slowing of AI development as systems are outpacing regulation and any guardrails.
Beyond the immediate industry, 20i’s new research found nearly two-thirds (65.9%) of employees in non-development roles who use AI to write code say their employer has no formal policy governing the practice.
Yet, a fifth (20.5%) of employees in these roles say their AI-generated code has contributed to a security breach at their organization.
AI-assisted coding workplace guidance:
- 26% of organizations have a formal policy governing AI-assisted coding.
- 34.2% of employees say their organization relies solely on informal guidance
- 31.7% report no policy whatsoever
- 8.2% say they simply don't know if one exists.
Furthermore, checks on AI-generated code are largely informal, with four in ten respondents testing their own code without asking anyone else to review it.
Lloyd Cobb, director at 20i, comments on the findings:
“AI is transforming the web industry, offering huge potential to boost efficiency and creativity, but it’s clear that more and more professionals are aware of the challenges it can also bring. Our findings show that developers are concerned about ethical misuse and want clear government regulation that reflects the power of AI.
“More safeguards can protect both businesses and end users, ensuring AI can be harnessed responsibly as adoption continues to grow.
“At organisation level, without a clear policy, businesses risk losing visibility over what’s being built, where it’s deployed, and what data it touches - a form of ‘shadow AI’ that mirrors earlier concerns around shadow IT.
“As more non-developers utilize AI, it’s also useful to define a clear threshold for when a project must be handed to a professional developer - particularly for customer-facing, data-handling, or business-critical applications. Mandating review processes for AI-generated code before deployment, rather than relying on self-testing, would help teams to reduce security and operations problems further down the line.”
