Oct, 2016 : GoDaddy Reaches 1 Million Registrants in UK

📅 October 7, 2016 - On Thursday, the web hosting giant GoDaddy announced that it has hit a milestone for registrations in the UK – now at 1 million and growing. The .UK ccTLD is a new offering from GoDaddy and was a major turning point for the hosting company. Some of the domains under the .UK ccTLD include .co.uk, .uk, .org.uk, and .me.uk. GoDaddy believes that around one quarter of all UK domains are registered through the company, a major milestone in addition to reaching the 1 million registrant mark.

Andrew Low Ah Kee, the Executive Vice President of GoDaddy International, made the following statement about the milestone:

“Reaching 1 million .UK domains demonstrates the value GoDaddy brings to customers by helping them create powerful digital identities. What is even more exciting to us than the milestone itself is the fact that we've grown our .UK domains under management by over 50 percent in the last 24 months. Our organic growth is a reflection that our purpose-built product and exceptional customer care resonate strongly with the U.K. market. We're committed to growing our U.K. business and are excited to continue supporting the digital revolution taking place in the U.K..”

Robert Boles had been running the company, and will be staying on in an external advisory role to smooth the transition. Boles had been Hostway CEO since 2014.

Emil Sayegh previously had been leading Codero as the CEO, president and chairman of the board.

📅 Oct 5, 2016 - VMware Government Cloud Business Sold to QTS - VMware recently announced an agreement with QTS Realty Trust for their government cloud business. This deal comes on the heels of VMware announcing a shift in cloud strategy. The company is majority-owned by Dell.

QTS Realty Trust is one of the largest data center providers in the United States. This acquisition means they will be able to sell services under their own brands instead of using VMware. Carpathia Hosting was acquired by QTS last year and has been providing services to government clients for VMware.

📅 Oct 10, 2016 - China’s GDS Holdings Wants in Nasdaq - A Chinese data center provider wants entry into the American stock market. GDS Holdings has filed for an IPO recently with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

China has been enjoying huge growth in the developing data center market, and according to GDS, there are few alternative data center options.

GDS are partnered with Aliyun, the cloud services division of Alibaba, and would like to enter more deals with cloud service providers.

📅 Oct 11, 2016 - Spying and Data Centers: An NSA Data Center in the UK - It probably won't surprise many to find out that the US surveillance outpost found in the UK has its own data center. This was revealed by a story by The Intercept, an anti-NSA online magazine from First Look Media. The story showed an incredible amount of details about the activities at Mentwith Hill Station, which came from documents leaked by Edward Snowden.

The first series of stories about Snowden's leaks came out in 2013 from Glenn Greenwald, one of the founding editors of The Intercept. The data center covers 10,000 square feet and was a $40 million project built between 2009 and 2012.
