📅 - China's answer to Facebook, Tencent, is integrating servers powered by OpenPower, the IBM alternative to Intel's x86 chip. According to IBM, OpenPower is focused on high-horsepower workloads, suitable to Tencent data centers that run Big Data workloads.
Tencent became China's most valuable publicly traded company this week.
OpenPower is developed through a foundation whose members also include Google, Nvidia, and Broadcom. IBM licenses OpenPower to other companies.

📅 - Delta Data Center Outage Costs $150 Million - The data center outages that plagued Delta Airlines for three days in August, grounding 2,000 flights, cost the company $150 million.
According to a study conducted by the Ponemon Institute, the average cost for a single data center outage is roughly $730,000. The costliest reportage outage, from the 60 data centers surveyed, caused a loss of about $2.4 million.
The Delta outage cost seems unusually high, but airlines have much more invested in the infrastructure than most other data centers.

📅 - SpamExperts Has Become Independently Owned - SpamExperts, an email security company, has recently announced they are now independently owned. The founders of the company have bought back all 100% of the company's stock shares.
Current CEO Sam Renkema and CT Dreas Van Donselaar established the company in 2005 and many investors were brought in. They bought the investors out by 2012, but took on more before buying them out more recently.
SpamExperts is headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands and email security to hosting companies, ISPs and telecommunication companies. They are on a mission to secure email across the globe and have clients in over 80 countries.

📅 - Google Cloud and Box Partner to Enhance Services - Box has partnered with Google to make the cloud storage even better. The cloud storage platform will be integrated with Google Docs and Google Springboard to allow easier collaboration for enterprise users. This announcement came at the BoxWorks conference as a part of a relaunch.
Box has also introduced a new interface for users, better workflow automation from a new tool called Box Relay and upgraded overall performance. This is all expected to attract more enterprise customers to the company.

📅 - Apigee Acquired by Google - Google has acquired a cloud software company called Apigee Corporation. Apigee is known for providing management tools for APIs. They offer a range of software to help with communication and data sharing, which are key for those developing apps for business in the cloud.
This just adds to Google's cloud presence and allows the company to improve their overall cloud products and services. The deal was reportedly worth $625 million. Apigee also has a very impressive customer base with big name clients, such as World Bank and AT&T.

📅 - ING Bank’s Data Center Knocked Offline - This past Saturday, ING Bank's Romanian customers could not access their money. A fire extinguisher test went wrong and knocked the entire data center offline, resulting in cash machines and online banking operations to fail.
The bank reported a discharge of the gas-based fire suppression system, which caused “unexpected” damage to the system's servers.
The problem lasted ten hours of the day, from 13:00 to 23:00 local time, and the bank was also unable to explain the problematic situation to it's customers since it's own communication system was affected as well.
