Apple Shuts Down First Successful Malware Attack on Mac OS X


📅 - Even the ironclad Mac OS X operating system is vulnerable to sophisticated malware specially designed to skirt past Apple's security parameters. Palo Alto researchers found ransomware, a type of malware that requests money in exchange for data on your computer, targeted at the Mac OS X operating system. The ransomware is called KeRanger and was found to be fully operational and functional. That's a first for Apple.

Apple immediately took action, revoking the abused security certificate that the KeRanger attackers used and updating their anti-malware system, XProtect, with a new signature in their efforts to halt further damage from the attack and to protect their users.
