Syrian Electronic Army Strikes Again, Hacking A Number of News Sites
📅 - Over the thanksgiving holiday, a slew of news websites fell victim to a cyber attack from the Syrian Electronic Army.
According to the Washington Post, many users visiting sites such as The Guardian, Forbes, NHL, CNBC, and the Daily News were greeted with a pop-up message stating: “You've been hacked by the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA),” followed by the group's logo.
The hacktivists also posted the following status via their official Twitter:
“Happy thanks giving, hope you didn't miss us! The press: Please don't pretend #ISIS are civilians. #SEA”
The SEA has been responsible for multiple hacking attacks over the last couple of years. The group has been linked to hacking newspapers, computers, and companies such as the Financial Tiems, Twitter, The New York Times, and the BBC.
At the beginning of this year the Syrian hacking group posted to Skype's 3 million followers warning users of Microsoft's email services.
“Don't use Microsoft emails (hotmail, outlook), They are monitoring your accounts and selling the data to the governments. More details soon #SEA.”
Another tweet was posted later that day saying, “stop spying on people.”
