U.S. Government To Spend $425 Million On Production Of Two Supercomputers
📅 - The U.S. Department of Energy announced plans on Friday to award $425 million to companies such as IBM and Nvidia in the production of two supercomputers that could aid in the research of science and “promote America's economic and national security.”
The Department will award $100 million to the FastForward 2 program which will develop “extreme scale” supercomputing technology, while another $325 million will be given to Oak Ridge and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to construct the two machines, says a press release from the DoE.
“High-performance computing is an essential component of the science and technology portfolio required to maintain U.S. competitiveness and ensure our economic and national security,” Secretary Moniz said. “DOE and its National Labs have always been at the forefront of HPC and we expect that critical supercomputing investments like CORAL and FastForward 2 will again lead to transformational advancements in basic science, national defense, environmental and energy research that rely on simulations of complex physical systems and analysis of massive amounts of data.”
IBM, Mellanox, and Nvidia will supply the parts for the two supercomputers, Summit and Sierra, which are expects to be five to seven times more powerful than any systems currently in use today.
